I was born in the mid LATE 70's on the South Coast. I was 6 weeks early and underweight. This is the first and only time I'd be early and UNDER weight in my life.
One of my family friends was one of the UK's FIRST mtf Transgendered women and I have had many TG friends over the years. When I was 18 I came out as gay and through a very good friend of the family I started working at The Magnum Club.
The drag queen Danny LA Rue was an Infrequent visitor to the club. You could always tell when Danny was due as "Miss Moss" would make sure there was (cheap) Champers on ice. To be honest I wasn't impressed by Danny out of drag and found his flirting with the young male barstaff tacky. However, when he was in a frock Danny was one of the best in the business.
It was at the Magnum that my first foray into drag took place. "Burly Shassey" was an occassional creation used mainly as an excuse for me to do (bad) Shirley Bassey and Tina Turner impressions. This was around the time of Priscilla Queen of the Desert came out.
After a year or so I left the Magnum and soon moved away to Leeds where Fame and Fortune eventually awaited me. I held numerous jobs including managing an "Adult Shop", managing a gothic clothes shop, being a Proffessional Tarot Reader and even a stint in an office working for Bastard Gas. I kept my hand in on the "showbiz" side of life by working two seasons as a "Magenta (pink) coat" at a rather less than glamorous seaside resort and by working for an ill fated private hospital's radio station. (They asked me to leave after hearing me play "lip up fatty" to the women getting their gastric bypasses in the obese ward!) This all left me frustrated as the inner diva was just screaming to get out.
After attending a couple of parties as the resurrected Burly Shassey and acting in a staged murder mystery in full drag Anna Glypta was soon born. This led me to become a mid-week karaoke hostess at The New Penny. After a year or so I took up the residency as the Penny's DJ and could be found there every weekend. After three hugely successful years, during which the Penny became THE place to be on the scene, I decided to take up the challenge of moving to The Viaduct and helping to put this venue on the map. I have also done summer season in Scarborough and have been priviledged and honoured enough to be asked to MC and DJ several gay and lesbian Civil Partnership functions and parties.
As well as DJing I have worked in Caberet as part of "The Funny Kuntz" and can sometimes be seen performing as the Southern one of "North and South " and will soon be putting together a caberet show for The Viaduct.
I am very proud to be on the Leeds Pride committee and was overwhelmed by the first event in 2006. The 2007 event was even bigger than we anticipated and once again I blubbed to see so many of our LGBT community coming out for a gay day! Future events including a Winter Pride and the Leeds Pride awards are being organised and Summer Pride promises to be EVEN bigger and better. In 2006 and 2007 I was honoured to be asked to be a guest Judge for the Leeds Drag Idol finals. This annual charity event has so far raised over £10,000 for local HIV/AIDS and sexual health charities.
As well as all this I write a regular column in Shout! magazine and have been called a "local legend" and a "living legend" by them. Which was nice.
When not working I can be found at all, some or none of the following: Mission, Fibre, Federation, Bar Zeus, The New Penny, Fuel, Space, The Edge, Speed Queen, O'Flannigans, Martha's, The Magnum, Heaven and even in Rio's, The Wendy House, The Cockpit, The Dungeon and Slimelight. Failing that I'll be at home, If you think you should know where that is send a photo and an email telling me why - LOL !!!
